NZQA Scholarship Chemistry tests your ability to apply knowledge across the entire secondary chemistry curriculum—not just one or two topics—to solve unfamiliar problems under pressure. You'll see 4 questions, each covering multiple concepts (acid-base, equilibrium, organic synthesis, thermodynamics, electrochemistry, spectroscopy, quantitative analysis). The exam expects you to show all working, use proper units and significant figures, and explain your reasoning clearly using correct chemistry vocabulary.

What examiners reward in Outstanding work
  • ·Completed the entire examination with no blank or partially answered questions, demonstrating time management across all four content areas
  • ·Drew organic structures using expanded or condensed structural formulae (not skeletal), with all atoms shown, and correctly identified products in multi-step synthesis schemes
  • ·Calculated and plotted acid-base titration curves accurately, then explicitly justified the buffering capacity at different stages by linking it back to the ratio of conjugate acid/base species
  • ·Justified predictions about unfamiliar compounds (e.g. shape, polarity, stability) by applying first principles—not memorised answers—showing clear reasoning about why alternatives were wrong
  • ·Balanced chemical equations directly from written descriptions and then linked the species in those equations to observable changes (colour, gas, precipitation), integrating stoichiometry with experimental evidence
  • ·Discussed electrochemical cells with complete understanding: explained which species oxidised/reduced, justified cell potential calculations, and described the movement of charge and ions in the cell

Scholarship (~3%)

You complete most of the exam, demonstrate good knowledge of chemistry vocabulary, and answer many questions with correct working, though some parts may be incomplete or lack depth in reasoning.

OOutstanding (~0.3%)

You complete every question fully, use unfamiliar situations to show you understand the underlying principles rather than just the textbook examples, and weave together multiple concepts (e.g. structure + spectroscopy, equilibrium + observations) in a seamless, well-justified narrative.

How to prep
  1. 1.Practice writing organic structures in expanded or condensed form with every atom shown—examiners mark down for skeletal structures or missing atoms, and many candidates lose marks here needlessly.
  2. 2.Do timed, full-length practice exams regularly and aim to attempt every question, leaving nothing blank; the assessment report flags that candidates who skip questions rarely reach Scholarship, and rushing to finish matters more than perfection on one question.
  3. 3.Memorise and drill quantitative calculations (titration curves, enthalpy from bond enthalpies, solubility, cell potentials) with correct significant figures and units baked in from the start—the report notes that strong calculation skills separate top Scholarship from those who don't make the threshold.
  4. 4.When describing a process (buffer, ester synthesis, electrochemistry, equilibrium shift), explicitly name the species involved and link changes in their concentration or state to observations; generic explanations without specific chemistry terminology cost marks consistently.
