What's the difference between Scholarship and Outstanding in Chinese?

Scholarship (~3% of candidates): You communicate naturally and fluently in both Chinese and English, develop personal viewpoints that meaningfully extend the material, use complex vocabulary and grammar with clarity, interpret texts logically, and show awareness of audience and purpose. Outstanding (~0.3%): You write and speak with stylistic sophistication that engages the reader/listener, make insightful independent connections well beyond the stimulus, use advanced idioms and structures naturally, speak with near-native clarity and intonation, and demonstrate critical evaluation that shows deep understanding of nuance and real-world implications.

How do I prepare for NZQA Scholarship Chinese?

1. Stop aiming for 'correct' Chinese—aim for fluent, natural expression with idiomatic phrasing. Scholarship examiners reward sophisticated language use, not just grammatical accuracy. Listen to native speakers (interviews, TED talks, podcasts) to internalize the rhythm and phrasing that mark Outstanding work. 2. Always extrapolate and make independent connections. Examiners consistently note that non-Scholarship work stays close to the stimulus material. When writing or speaking, ask yourself: 'What does this mean beyond what the text says? What real-world implications or personal reflection does this connect to?' Prepare by practicing this skill with every practice text. 3. For Question 3 (the speech), use your 10 minutes of planning time to write out 2–3 key insightful points and practice saying them aloud with natural pacing, pauses, and self-correction. Outstanding speakers don't recite—they sound reflective and confident. Practice speaking for 3–4 minutes from rough notes until it feels conversational.
