Scholarship German tests whether you can genuinely think and communicate in German — not just translate or summarise. You sit a three-hour exam with two writing questions (responding to a listening passage in German, and a reading text in German) plus a short individual speaking task of 3–5 minutes in German. The big difference from NCEA is that you are expected to go well beyond what the texts say: form your own argued position, connect ideas to your own experiences, and evaluate multiple perspectives — all while using high-level, accurate German (or English for Question Two).

What examiners reward in Outstanding work
  • ·Communicates in clear, precise, accurate, and genuinely captivating German at a very high level (CL8+) consistently across all three questions — not just in places.
  • ·Fully interprets the stimulus material and then goes well beyond it, showing perceptive and insightful thinking rather than just reporting what was said.
  • ·Clearly synthesises and evaluates ideas across questions — drawing implications, not just listing points — and backs claims with specific evidence.
  • ·Takes a strong, clear stance in the English response (Question Two) and explores multiple perspectives in convincing detail, rather than sitting on the fence or only arguing one side.
  • ·In the speaking task, refers explicitly to both the listening and reading texts, then develops personal ideas and experiences that genuinely extend beyond the texts, all within the time limit.
  • ·Avoids repetitive phrasing and surface-level connections; instead deepens key points with further sophistication, for example by engaging with nuanced details in the texts (such as hybrid language forms like the 'Hamburger Sie') rather than sticking to the obvious.

S
Scholarship (~3%)

Scholarship is awarded to candidates who use the stimulus texts to build sophisticated, well-argued ideas, communicate naturally and with some style in German (CL8+), and integrate some perceptive personal opinions across all three answers.

OOutstanding (~0.3%)

Outstanding is reserved for candidates who are consistently captivating and precise across every single question, go the furthest beyond the texts with the most insightful and deeply synthesised thinking, and write and speak German at the highest level with barely any repetition or imprecision.

How to prep
  1. 1.Practice going beyond the text, not summarising it — the single most common reason candidates miss Scholarship is that they retell what the passage said rather than responding to it with their own argued position and personal connections.
  2. 2.Build a bank of real personal experiences connected to language, culture, and communication (e.g. intercultural experiences, learning another language, encounters with formality or translation challenges) so you can reach for concrete, specific examples quickly under exam pressure.
  3. 3.Time yourself strictly on Question Three: going over five minutes costs marks, so practise delivering a complete, structured spoken response in exactly 3–5 minutes using only brief notes.
  4. 4.Read and listen to authentic German materials (podcasts, articles, opinion pieces) on social and cultural topics so that you can handle unfamiliar vocabulary through context and arrive at the exam with sophisticated language — varied vocabulary, complex sentence structures, no repetitive phrases — already at your fingertips.
