What's the difference between Scholarship and Outstanding in Japanese?

Scholarship (~3% of candidates): You show detailed understanding of the texts, link ideas together effectively, use Japanese confidently at CL3 level, and back up your points with relevant examples from the passages that feel authentic to your own experience. Outstanding (~0.3%): You sustain sophisticated reasoning across your entire response, analyze the writer's exact language choices and why they matter, justify your ideas with evidence drawn carefully from across all texts, and weave in multiple perspectives—all while making it look effortless.

How do I prepare for NZQA Scholarship Japanese?

1. Practice identifying *why* a speaker or writer chose specific words or phrases, not just *what* they said. 2. Plan your essays to hit 3–4 developed paragraphs minimum, with each paragraph sustaining one idea fully. 3. When you use your own examples, always trace them back to the text explicitly so the link is unmissable. 4. In the speaking section, prepare short, specific examples in advance and practice staying on topic for 3–4 minutes without notes.
