Pānui kia mōhio ki te reo o tōna ao
This is a Level 1 external Te Reo Māori reading exam worth 6 credits. Students read passages written in te reo Māori about topics related to their world, then answer questions in either English or te reo Māori to show how well they understand what they have read. The 2022 exam was about a trip to the marae, including problems and solutions that came up along the way. Students also had to apply a whakataukī (proverb) to their understanding of the text.
You follow the general gist of the text and can identify the main points. Your answers are simple and short, may only cover part of the question, and do not need much supporting evidence. Some errors in detail are okay at this level.
You show a clear understanding of the key parts of the text. You back up your answers with reasons and evidence from the text, expand on your ideas, and answer all (or most) parts of each question. Minor errors in detail are fine.
You answer every part of every question in full detail. You show a deep, nuanced understanding of the text — including implied or inferred meanings. You link examples together convincingly, draw conclusions, and support everything with well-chosen evidence from the text.
