Demonstrate understanding of art works in relation to their physical environments
This standard asks you to show that you understand how artworks connect to and are affected by the physical spaces where they're displayed or created. You need to describe the artworks and their environments, then explain how features like location, purpose, historical context, and physical conditions influence what the artwork means and how it works.
You describe the artwork and environment separately, then identify some basic connections between them (e.g., the sculpture is in the park because parks are public spaces).
You explain specific relationships by referring to context, purpose, or influence—showing why the environment matters to understanding the artwork (e.g., how the marae setting makes the tukutuku pattern's cultural meaning clearer).
You evaluate whether the relationship between artwork and environment works well or poorly, weighing different factors and making a reasoned judgment about the effectiveness of their connection.
