Investigate how organisms survive in an extreme environment
NZQA suppresses grade rates for low-cohort standards.
This standard asks you to investigate how living organisms (including humans) manage to survive in really harsh environments like deep oceans, extreme temperatures, or outer space. You'll need to find information about an extreme environment, explain why organisms need special adaptations or modifications to survive there, and describe how those adaptations actually help them cope with those conditions. You'll also need to keep track of where your information came from.
You describe why an organism needs special adaptations for the extreme environment and explain how those adaptations help it survive there.
You link the specific environmental conditions directly to the adaptations, and explain in detail how those adaptations allow the organism to function in that harsh environment.
You show integrated connections between multiple environmental conditions and adaptations, and you justify (not just explain) why those particular adaptations are necessary and effective for survival—showing deep understanding of the cause-and-effect relationships.
