Respond in New Zealand Sign Language related to everyday contexts
This is an external NZSL standard worth 5 credits where students record themselves signing in New Zealand Sign Language. You respond to visual prompts — like a lunch menu or a picture story — across two 45-minute sessions. Both sessions must be submitted as videos. The assessment looks at how clearly and accurately you can sign ideas, opinions, and information about everyday topics.
You can get your basic meaning across even if there are some mistakes. You express simple information and opinions, refer to at least two different time frames (e.g. today and tomorrow), and can be understood overall. You might rely on fingerspelling quite a bit and make some signing errors, but communication still works.
You use a wider range of signs and expressions with less reliance on fingerspelling. You use facial expressions alongside your hand signs. You go beyond just listing — you build on your ideas and explain them a bit more. Your signing is mostly clear and doesn't take much effort to understand.
You use a wide variety of signs confidently and accurately. Your facial expressions, use of signing space, and grammar are all strong. You connect your ideas clearly and enrich them with detail rather than just listing. There are very few or no errors that get in the way of communication.
