Demonstrate understanding of a variety of extended spoken Chinese texts
This is an external exam (sat at the end of the year under exam conditions) worth 5 credits. You listen to several extended spoken Chinese audio passages — things like conversations, interviews, or reports on topics of social interest — and answer questions about them in English, Māori, or Chinese. The passages cover both concrete and abstract ideas, and some develop a line of argument. You need to show you understood what was said, not just translate it word for word.
You show a general understanding of what the passages are about. You get the main ideas across, though some details may be missing or slightly wrong. Your answers mostly follow the flow of the audio and may rely heavily on direct translation.
You show clear understanding with very few errors. You pick out relevant information and explain it clearly. You touch on implied meanings but don't develop them much — your explanations stay fairly surface-level without deeper evaluation.
You show thorough understanding of both what is said and what is implied. Your answers are well-organised, directly address the questions, and use evidence from the passages to explain and justify conclusions — including meanings that are not obviously stated in the audio.
